11 km Beach Run

Wednesday 29th February 2012

Today we ran 11 kilometres from Hardwick Bay along the coast all the way to Wambana. My time in this run was ninety two minutes. It was pouring today so everything was soaked, we rode on the buses to Hardwick Bay and we got off there and went to the beach where we warmed up, the warm up really didn't do much as we were all still cold. We started running exactly at 7.25 am it was hard to run in the sand, so I devised a plan to run on the shells and rocks near the edge of the water. I also decided to break the run into different sections and set myself short term goals. I decided to run 3.4 kilometres flat out and then break for about 500 metres then run slash jog all the way to the 5.5 kilometre mark then break for 500 metres again and run to the end of the pony trail and walk 30 metres and sprint the rest of the way in. It was really hard until the 3.4 kilometre mark as I hadn't found my steady state. Then when I started to run again it felt a lot easier as I got into my steady state really quickly. I did however feel a massive pain in my legs and back as I was constantly using my legs and back because I pushing myself to the limits.

Bill Song and myself were running along with each other and we pushed each other along, then when we got to the pony trail, I ran a little faster and I decided to finish in front of Bill, but Paul came along in the support vehicle and I sprinted off ahead as I wanted to finish before him and he almost ran me over, but I just kept on sprinting to beat him to the end. It felt really good when I reached the end as I knew that I had just run 11 kilometres and that all the training and hard work we had done over the fitness program payed off and we managed to do what we thought was the most difficult thing in the world. We estimated time for this run the previous day and Dale also made a prediction on how fast we would do, my estimate was ninety minutes and Dale's estimate was eighty five minutes, but because of the weather conditions we all did a little slower than expected. So Dale is cutting our time down by two minutes I my prediction was exactly correct.

Yesterday Dale explained to us about the rewards that we would if the boys who challenged him beat him and the consequences we would get if they lost. The reward was that we were allowed to buy things at the BP when we stopped along the way. If one person beat him then we were allowed two items, if two people beat him then we were allowed three items, it three people beat him then we were allowed five items and if all four of them beat him we were allowed ten items, sadly only one person beat him so we are only allowed two items, but I am still happy with that. Dale also explained how this run was like our life, the first part of the run was school and university then, the second part is when we are starting our jobs, the third part is when we are senior people in our jobs and the final part of the run is when we are retiring. It is meant to show us how we can overcome any challenges we face throughout life. This run was also meant to show us that we can do anything if we set our minds to it and try our very best.

Welcome to my Wambana Blog

Welcome family, friends and teachers to my Wambana Blog. I have been enjoying the stay here so far and I hope the month keeps getting better and better. I am sharing my Wardli with 6 other boys they are Nicholas Tsakalos, Ray Brown, Timothy Branford, Ned Clark-proud and Bill Song. This is a picture of all us together on the bean bags we have in our classroom.

Living in our Wardlis has been a great challenge as we have to look after ourselves and the whole wardli. The things we have to do include cooking, washing up, setting up the bed, drying out the clothes and cleaning the Wardli till it’s spotless. Below is a picture of our Wardli which we are living in and looking after.

Wardli is the indigenous meaning for dwelling, that is why they are called that and it also sounds interesting. Our Wardli has a dining/lounge area where we hang out, next to that is our kitchen where we all take turns cooking, then the laundry where we wash and dry our clothes, then there are the two bathrooms which is then followed by three bedrooms where two boys stay in each. Outside is our verandah, in front of that is our little garden and behind our Wardli is our clothes lines.

Cycle Tour

Day 1 Monday 6th February 2012
Monday was the first we got to shred rubber on the road. The trip we did in the morning was from our Wambana campus or Point Turton to West Cowie and then the return from there as well. On our way over to West Cowie we thought it was incredibly tough as we were so unfit from the holidays, but the first real relief was when we stopped at the Brutus area school which had some really old cars which were worth around 2,000 dollars and when it is restored it will be worth around 100,000 dollars each. The newest of the two cars still had its for sale sign there, it’s pictured below. Then we came back to Wambana for lunch, we found out that we had only done 20 kilometres out the total 40 kilometres for the day so in the afternoon we started from the campus and we rode all the way to Warooka where we posted our letters and had a look at the town. When we got back we were so tired but still we had to make dinner clean our trangia, leadership handover and do oranges lemons and winner before we go to bed, so by the time we were in the tent, sleeping bag we fell asleep immediately. Oranges, Lemons and Winners is a time when we all tell each other what we thought was good, bad about the day and who we thought were the best performers.

Day 2 Tuesday 7th February 2012
Today was when we were able to really get into the flow of riding. We rode from base camp or Point Turton to Minlaton where we posted our letters and then we packed our bikes into the buses and rode the way back. We started riding our twenty four gear mountain bikes around dirt tracks and Tuesday was personaly the best day because it was relatively flat, but there was parts of the track which were covered in sand so we were all really annoyed that we were used as lab rats because that specific track is usually ridden the groups in winter when the sand is harder. While we were ridding back to Wambana in the buses, but Chikovski’s right front tyre blew and bits of the tyre were scattered everywhere. Jeff could accommodate most of the boys who were in Chikovski but there were five less seats. So five boys including myself stayed behind, we were allowed to start on the letter for tomorrow and we had heaps of things to write about including the tyre blowing up. It took ages to remove and change the tyre because it was rusted on so it took two teachers and the RAA repair man to remove the bolts and one teacher had to keep their foot on the breaks. The picture is of the blown out tyre.
Day 3 Wednesday 8thFebruary 2012
Wednesday was the day where we got lots of working as most of the track was full of hills. We rode around the whole Innes National Park. The challenge was probably the hardest thing we did as we had to ride almost three quarters of the day back in the gears two and eight. It was excruciatingly painful up the hills and easy cursing down them. Then there was this massive hill where I stacked it and the gears changed without my knowing. When we started riding we rode up the steepest hill in the Yorke Peninsula which led to this beautiful 360 degree lookout and then going down the hill was really fun as you built up heaps of speed because it was so steep. Then we kept riding for a bit more but we let the slow people go in front so we could all reach at around the same time at dolphin bay. When we reached dolphin bay we were allowed to go for a swim if we finished our letters, I was one of the first finished but I did not want to swim because some of the boys who were finished before me and had gone in had said it was really cold. Then we rode the same way back to  the buses which we packed up and then we set of back to Wambana even though it felt hard it felt really rewarding.
Day 4 Thursday 9th February 2012
The last day of the cycle tour felt extremely hard because we rode mostly the whole way on gravel so we felt very horrible because of the corrugations.  Anyway we started riding at a rode just of Sunbury and we rode to suicide point where we had our lunch it was called suicide point because a young boy around the age of 20 got a massive fish on his and he refused to let it go, so he was pulled in to his watery grave. Then we rode to the Trou Bridge lighthouse where we took some amazing photos of it and kangaroo island. Then we rode through a wind farm with  our leadership partner  (Andrew Fleming was my partner), so that we could teach about each other for the excuse me gentlemen program. We finished at Edithburgh where we went on a compulsory swim in a small tidal pool, it felt great as we were refreshed and cool. We were so relieved when got out and got back in the bus to know there was no more riding to be done, but we felt really pleased with each other as we just rode around 180 kilometres to finish the whole trip.

Fitness Program

Friday 10th February 2012

The training session was a 3.4 kilometre run from the tunnel to the sacred rock and then back again. The run took me 24.10 minutes. We went out from the tunnel at exactly 7 o'clock, and we went out on the run along the north to north eastern walking trail. I was fourth slowest, I though I did well for the physical status I was in but later I hoped to get better as we would have to run 11 kilometres. My body was really hurting as I had never more than 3 kilometres before, but I overcame the pain by focusing on something I wanted to do in the future. I made myself persist by setting running goals such as run to the largest pine tree and then walk for 25 steps then run again. When I run this session again I will set further goals, but not too far so I can reach them.

Saturday 11th February 2012

The training session was a 5.5 kilometre from the tunnel to the jetty and back again. The run took me 35.13 minutes. We left the tunnel at exactly 7 o'clock again and we ran along the walking path until the sacred rocks and then we kept going up onto the road until the jetty where we hit the power at the end then we ran back. On the way back Dale ran with Luke and myself we only stopped twice the whole way back and each time we only walked 25 steps the final 300 metres Dale made Luke and myself sprint the rest I was able to sprint ahead of them so I beat Luke by around 12 seconds. My body really hurt as we sprinted and jogged almost the whole way so we hoped that it was worth it.

Sunday 12th February 2012

I was leader today with Andrew Flemming, we ran to the mall at around 7 am in the moring to collect the paper, then when we came back we realised we had not posted the letters so we had to run to the mall again to post them. So in return we ran 4 kilometres, and then when we returened we still had to do things like news of the day, willy wheather and excuse me gentlemen. It was hard sprinting 2 kilometres flat out as we were going to be late otherwise. Next time I am leader I will make sure that  we take the letters first so we don't have to run again.

Monday 13th February 2012

The traning session was a run to the pony club which was a 3.8 kilometre run. It was on sand as well so we took a little longer, my time was 30.41 minutes. We left the gate at exactly 7 am but this time we ran left and into sand for almost the whole way it was soft sand so we all struggled running so we mostly jogged or walked. We went all the way to the pony club gate hit it and then turned around and ran back but on the way back we were allowed to run on the beach where the hard sand is. My body felt agganisingly painful as we had to run through thick sand which didn't give us much rebound. I think Dale's technique of thinking of something else is really effective.

Tuesday 14th February 2012

The training session was a game today, it was a game of galic football between wardli 2 and 4 playing against wardli 3 and 5. We were ahead by quite a bit then we lost a lot of goals when the rule that everbody had to over the halfway line to be counted otherwise for the other team. It was really annoying as we lost many goals becuase most of the people were slow. It also hurts when someone smashes the ball straight into your knees and accidently knees you in the thigh. I really wish we could have played soccer as it is a much better sport.

Wednesday 15th February 2012

The training session today was our second 5.5 kilometre run, my time was 35 minutes a whole 13 seconds faster. This felt like a whole minute for me, I felt tired but I think I could have done more if I pushed myself harder. I did force myslef to run the whole time to the sacred stones, then I walked as I felt really tired. Running on the jetty is really hard as if you misplace your footing you will fall and lose time. I am trying to run or jog the whole way to the end and back without stopping.

Thursday 16th February 2012

The training session today was a game, we played two games today they were galic football and soccer. For the first half of the time and then we played soccer. We still lost the game by one point because of the rule where everybody has to be over the halfway line. I think we did better in the second half of the period as most of the soccer player were on my team and most of the football player were on the other team. I still wished we could have just played soccer alone as it so much better.

Friday 17th February 2012

The training session today was a 9.4 kilometre run, but we were allowed a choice between the 9.4 and the 7.2 kilometre runs. I dicided to choose the 7.2 kilometre run as in the other one you had to run 5.5 non stop. We ran from the tunnel along the beach all the way to Flaherty's corner and back. I struggled running as it was fully sand but only the first quater or so is thick which is where I struggled, I did try really hard though and I beat 9 people back and I think that is an achievement, however I think I can do even better by the time we ge to the 11 kilometre run.

Saturday 18th February 2012

Today was a fitness session we did different types of excersices to improve our agility, speed and performance and in the process we were able to win points for the wambana challenge. My wardli number 5 won 2 points during the excersices, the ones we won were the bean pocket one and the goal post ones. It was rather hard as we had to be quick and agile on our feet but also e attentive. Then we played a game of dodgeball and we lost miserably as we weren't quick enough and we didn't sverve enough.

Sunday 19th February 2012

The training session today was a 3.4 kilometre run and it was a rather difficult one as I had recently run a 7.2 kilometre run so my joints we still aching but I think I posted a resonable time beacuse I beat my old time by a minute as it was 23.10. I ran all the way to the sacred rocks and on the way back I got a massive stich but I kept jopgging really slowly the whole way back so by the end I collapsed as I broke out into a sprint in the last 100 metres or so. I think by the next time we do the run I can do it even better as I will be more fit.

Monday 20th February

The training session today was a 5.5 kilometre run and it was also hard, but this time it felt easier running all the way to the rocks and I didn't feel as tired, my time was worse this time than my previuos one but I felt as though I ran more this time, so maybe I made a miscalculation and my time was 36.15. I think I can probably push my self even harder and be back even faster, but I did not get any streching time so that might have affected my time I don't know, but I will try to beat my previous record the next ime we run.

Tuesday 21st February 2012

The training session today was a strength session. We did chin ups for the whole session, we practised doing them by ourselves. I struggled to reach the bar but after I got hold I could do a few in a row then my arms really hurt, we worked our biceps and triceps. We also had a competition of who canhold on the bar for as long as possible and I got 15 seconds. We were then allowed to do chin ups from side to side. It was hard but that was probably the most fun.

Wednesday 22nd February 2012

The training session today was a power session. We did sprints today, it was really tough as it we used muscles that we usually don't use. I personally like the excerise where we were on a boat and we had to run to the bow, stern, port or starburd depending on which was called out. If you were one of the last five to arrive at the spot or you went to the wrong spot you had to do five push ups. Then the boat started to turn and we had to adjust according to which way it went, I never had to do any push ups as I was always alert.

Thursday 23rd February 2012

The training session today was a game, we played a game of galic football. The teams were made from the birthdays so it was green bibs vs blue bibs I was on the blue bib team at the end we ended up wining 15 to 1. I really helped as I was playing in defence and I stopped people getting close enough to take a shot at goals and I also played up forward and scored a goal it counted as 3 though so it was awesome.

Friday 24th February 2012

The training session today was 3.4 kilometre run, I did the run in 24 minutes it felt pretty good as I was just over my previous time and I didn't feel puffed even though I ran/jogged all the to the rocks and back. I think  can push myself further and do the run in an even faster time. My body didn't really hurt as my bodies fitness has imroved and increassed in such a short time. I want to run the all the way to the rocks the next time we do the 3.4 kilometre run and then jog the rest of the way back.

Saturday 25th February 2012

I was leader today so I went to the mall in the morning and collected the newspaper and posted the letters. Andrew Flemming and myself returned with plenty of time left and so we wrote all the news up on the board. The boys were still playing their gaem so joined in and helped out the boys in my wardli who were playing soccer. I however wish that I didn't as I hadn't streched or warmed up before it so I felt cramps and pain immideatly. It really hurt but it was great to hear that I helped my team win.

Sunday 26th February 2012

We ran a 3.4 kilometre run today and I ran it in 24.12 minutes. It felt pretty good doing it again and the best part was that I didn't stop this whole time, that is why I was a little bit slower, but I think I it was a lot better time as I became fitter by not stopping. Since I didn't stop my body felt a major lack of oxygen so it hurt a lot but I think I did the right thing and it seems to have paid off. I managed to sprint the last 300 metres or so it felt hard as I tried to keep Jordo behind me and I actually managed to do it.

Monday 27th February 2012

Today we ran 5.5 kilometres and I ran it in 38.12 minutes that was my slowest time. I think it was because there was nobody to compete against as I was running by myself almost the whole. However near the end Yu Xing and myself ran together and pushed ourselves along and we pretty much sprinted from the sacred back to wambana on the 11 kilometre run I think I should run  next to someone so we keep pushing ourselves all the way and not give up.

Tuesday 28th February 2012

Today's fitness session was a beach walk. We walked upto the bit of track that drops down to the beach, near the pony club we stopped there and Dale explained about the 11 kilometre run, then we were allowed to chose to walk along the beach or walk back along the pony trail. It is really scary knowing that we have to run 11 kilometres tomorrow and we have to try our hardest and run our heart out. I am really going to give it my all and I really want to get under one hour and 20 minutes, that is my goal.

Hardwick Bay Revegetation Project

Weeds are bad for the environment because they can spread their seeds really quickly and they are very hard to kill as even when they are out of the soil they can survive and sprout. Three weeds that we learnt about were Lincoln weeds, wheat and box thorn.

Humans eat weeds such as wheat, and pooh the seeds out which spread, they also keep certain weeds in their garden because it looks good but it can spread really easily. When they are out in the rural areas they can spread easily and affect natural vegetation.

Weeds are spread through wind, weather conditions, bird droppings and other animals, human clothes and shoes, tourists and shipping containers. These are the most common ways they are spread there are other ones such as people keeping them in gardens.

Weeds are not the same all over Australia as they are adapted to certain types of weather conditions. Such as the cousin to the Aloe Vera gel is adapted to survive in the rural and desert area. If they were the same all over Australia it would have to be a super weed which survives in all temperature and climates.

The weeds which are adapted to the heat will survive where as the native Australian plants will die off as they are adapted to survive in the cool and humid climates, such as in the peninsulas and bays. So it will definitely add to the weed problem around the world. They will slowly spread across Australia and take over the native plants place.

People are aware of the dangers that the weeds poses to the local vegetation in public reserves and areas. That is why they want to help weed and plant native plants. People also want to protect the local wildlife from foreign species of plants. They can also harm people because they maybe allergic to that new type of plant because they have not been introduced and built up immunity against it.

Things that we can do to help the environment include keeping weeds in contained areas. We should not keep weeds as they harm the environment, if we do keep them we must maintain by doing weeding and spraying weedicides.

Hobbsy's History Tour

Friday the 17th of February was the day my group went on the History tour with Dale Hobbs, we went to three local historical places of interest. They were the Warooka museum, the Brentwood cemetery, and the final place we visited was the Sandalwood Park.

The Warooka museum was a very interesting place to visit as it was set up by volunteers and donated goods. Before we entered the museum Hobbsy gave us some background information about the place such as the building was actually house where the trooper lived and other interesting info like that. The three most interesting things I learnt were about the trooper, the whalers and about the calvary.

The trooper was a person who worked for the British army; they were usually privates who were looking for a promotion. The trooper use to carry around a baton but later on they got single barrel shotguns. They wore woollen cloths all throughout the year to distinguish themselves from the general public. The trooper was responsible for law and order for the local district they lived in, they would work there for about three years and then they would be moved or promoted.

Whalers were a breed of horse which was bred for all round purposes, such as travelling long distances, all day work and tough manual work. They were mainly used for farming but when World War 1 started they were the main horses taken, they were used in the calvary because of their characteristics. They were bred from a stallion, a mare, three fellies and one cult; they were picked up from South Africa and brought over on the first convoy. When the later convoys came they brought more horses and they were let to mix with the first ones so a new breed was formed and since the first state they landed was in New South Whales so they were named Whalers.

The calvary were trained to fight on horseback, they fight using a sword called a saber, it has a knucle buster on the holder so they can punch people who were right nexxt to them, and along the sword there was air channels so that the sword was easy to retract out of someone after they had been stabbed. They also carried a single barrel shotugun, but they didn't prefer using them as they had no way of controlling the whalers they were ridding on.

The second place we visited was the Brentwood cemetry, it was an odd place to have a cemtetry as it was surrounded by thick shurb, but there were three main reasons it was located there, the first one was the location was located near the centre of the district, the second one was that it was in a rural area so it was nice and quiet as not many people know it is there, the third reason was the soil in the area it was a soft clayey soil which was easy to dig. Two of the epitares that impressed me were ' Blessed are the pure in  heart for they shall see god'. and the second one is 'In sadness we watched her lingering breath till she lay like a lily sp lovely in death.

The final place we visited was Sandalwood Park, the ark had heaps of interesting things that people used and had in the early ages. Some of the things I learnt were that the wagons they had were pulled 6 horses so the person driving had to hold 12 leather reins. A sulki was pulled by one horse and was used to go to chruch. The King famly built walls to stop dingo's getting to livestock. The stable's housed horses and the person who was caring also lived with them. The blacksmith worked behind the stables with all the tools. The butchery is behind the stables, meat hung on the hooks here and then it is taken to the smokroom. Plaster was made from horse hair and limestone solution. They locked their servants ina little out housse. They had a massive smokeroom where meat was cut and cured. Tiled toiltes indicated it belonged to the owner.

Snorkelling

Some of the skills I learnt while snorkelling we how to stop my mask from fogging, how to duck dive and blow the water out when I am finished. To stop your mask from fogging up you must spit it in each eye hole and rinse it with water, this prevents the fog from forming. While duck diving you must hold your breath and when you finsh the dive you come back out make your chin touch you chest and do a qucik harsh blow, this forces the water to flow out.

I saw plenty of seaweed, small colourful fish and a massive blue crab that was scuttling around. I also saw plenty of holes in the net where fish streamed in and out of the pool. We went snokelling in the local swimming pool and Flaherty's beach. It was great fun and it was nice, cool and refreshing. The visibilty was very clear as I could see everything clearly underwater. I could see my buddy perfectly underwater and the pictures that Paul took of us underwater were really clear beacuse of the visibilty. The best part was probably going snorkelling for the first time and feeling like a natural and doing so well. I wish i could do better on the duck dives as I struggle with those. My greatest challenge was after the duck dives when we had to blow the water out I could never quite do that instead I would suck water in. I also struggled in the tests we did at the pool where we had to swim and find our snorkels underwater, put them on and keep swimming.

Novel

The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian

By Sherman Alexie
The Black-Eye-of-the-Month Club

1. Junior is in this club because kids consider him retarded and kids on the res who are retards get beaten up at least once a month.

2. He draws cartoon's because they are his way of escape out his his life. His first two pictures depict that he doesn't might teasing himself or demotivating himself.

3. The style of writing in the first chapter is very casual, and negative as the author describes the character as a person who is always bullied and harassed.

Why Chicken  Means So Much to Me

1. To him the worst thing about being poor is not being able to help his best friend Oscar ( his pet dog) his family was too poor so they could not afford to pay for treatment so he weeped and cried. His mum and dad decided to put the poor dog out of his misery and so they shot the dog.

2. It shows that Junior and his family can not afford to eat everyday as they are so poor, but when his dad brings a big bucket of KFC he is starving and that is why the food tastes better.

3. Oscar gets extremely sick and he suffers a lot, he is really badly suffering so Juniors dad shoots him to put him out of his misery. This illustrates that the family are not able to look after the poor dog and they don't what him to suffer either as they are nice people.

4. Poverty is a cycle in Juniors family because according to him poverty doesn't give strength or teach you lessons about preservence but instead it just teaches you about being poor.

5. Five adjectives that would describe Juniors personality so far would be, artistic, smart, negative, poetic and retarded.

Revenge Is My Middle Name

1. Junior and Rowdy's relationship is really odd, as Junior is a smart, nerdy boy and Rowdy is the tough and harsh boy. Rowdy however look after Junior as he is weak and fragile, but he only does this because Junior is the only person who truly understands his feelings.

2. The Spokane Powwow is an annual powwow celebration over the Labour Day weekend. At the powwow there usually is singing, war dancing, gambling, storytelling, laughter. fry bread, hamburgers, hot dogs, arts and crafts, plus there would be plenty of alcoholic brawling.

3. Rowdy snuck into the Andrusses tent and shaved their eyebrows off and cut their braids off. Rowdy did these things because the three brothers were playing catch with him and calling him names which included hydro because of his brain condition and they kneed him in the balls. This shows that Junior and Rowdy are close friends as they were born only two hours different from each other and they are the only ones who understand each others feelings.

Because Geometry Is Not a Country Somewhere Near France

1. Mr P is an old man that teaches at the local school in the Reservation, he sometimes forgets to come to school. He sometimes teaches class in his pyjamas, the tribe houses all the teachers in a one bedroom cottage, this is because you are not allowed to teach at the school and his always sleepy.

2. He doesn't like white people because they are considered as the liberal, white, vegetarian do-gooders and conservative, white missionary saviours. Junior hates how they think they are so important because they help the children on the reservation to get some education.

3. He feels annoyed that his school and his tribe are so poor  and sad hat they have to study from books that their parents studied form. Which roughly means that the book would be 30 years older that him, he felt horrible as the book actually had Agnes Adams written on the front, he felt that his hopes and dreams floated up in a mushroom cloud.

Hope Against Hope

1. Junior threw his geometry book because he was so annoyed and frustrated at the fact that the book was 30 years older than himself. It signifies that he still hasn't lost hope and he wants to learn and be knowledgeable and want to be like his sister in the end.

2. He says these things because all the Indians on the reserve have given up, he uses examples like Rowdy to describe what he means he explains why Rowdy doesn't hurt Junior because he was they only good thing in Rowdy's life and he doesn't want to give up on him. He explains how all the kids have given up, all his friends, all the bullies, their parents and their grandparents even the teachers on the reserve have given up.

3. Mr P's advice to Junior is to leave the reserve forever. Mr P recons that Junior has been fighting from the day he was born as he fought off the seizures, he fought off all the drunks and drug addicts and he kept his hope. He believes that Junior will find more and more hope the farther yo walk away from the reservation.

Go Means Go

1. Junior's parents react very well with Junior's desicion to change schools, it was almost like they were hoping for him to change schools, this shows that they still haven't lost hope in their son and want him to succed in life and have a better one than what they were having and are having.

Rowdy Sings the Blues

1. Sporting results are used often to compare the two schools as that was the only thing that was common between the two schools. Reardan where better in  everything else as the had all the money and education, they needed to succseded in life.

2. Rowdy reacts very badly to Junior's decision to change schools, he thinks that Junior has turned into a white lover so he shouldn't be friendes with someone who goes to a white person's school. He also feels upset and cries as he lost his one and only friend.

3. Rowdy disguises his pain by screaming and stopping himself from crying, eventhough he felt so much pain and misery as he lost his only friend who understands him it also shows that he really cared about him and now he has nobody to help him through his tough times at his home.

How to Fight Monsters

1. Junior has deemed to have betrayed his tribe becuase he changed school's from Wellpint High to Reardon, so all the other Indians on the reservation think he has betrayed their beliefs and ideas about the white people as he is going to mix with them.

2. It shows the difference between the two races and how much there is a rich and poor side in the society. It symbolizes that Junior thinks and believes he has no hope being an Indian as white people get everything good in their life where as the Indians don't get anything that can help them in their future.

3. On the reservation people normally call him by his nick name where as in Reardon they call him by his proper christened name. He did know about this so he told his nick name to everybody and when the role was called out there was confusion about who it was.

4. They acted strangely towards him the Reardon boys who paid attention to him didn't get violent or punched him they only called him names. When he punched Roger in the face and gave him a blood nose he gained respect and the kids treated him normally.

5. He could have reacted violenty to all the name calling but instead he felt fraid and scared that they might bash him up, so he kept a low profile and decided to ignore all the name calling, but he still didn't like them calling him names.

6. In the reservation you had to win fist fights to gain respect and they would get into them all the time and nobody would care, but in Reardan nobody got into fist fights as they consider it cruel and ill mannered. They tease, harrass and bully but they will never get into fight with the person unlike on the res where they would definately do that.

7. It is a significant moment in Junior's life as he thinks he has gained some respect and they won't give him as much or any trouble. He also thinks that his world has shifted from being a punching bag to someone who is not picked on or troubled by big, strong, and powerful boys.

Grandmother Gives Me Some Advice

1. He learns that he couldn't count on anyone to help him or keep him safe anymore as his best friend hated him and wouldn't help him even if it was life or death becuase he apparently betrayed him and left him for whtie people and white culture.

2. Junior's grandmother's advice is that becuase he stood up for he thought was right, he gained respect from the other boys and now they wouldn't bother him, but if they do knee them in the balls next time. Mainly that they pushed him around to see how tough he was.

Tears of a Clown

1. Junior's story about Dawn illustres that Junior is a big dreamer, he fell in love with the best powwow dancer on the res, he told his feelings about her to Rowdy who explained the situation andmade him understand that Dawn doesn't care about him, it also shows that Junior is an emotional boy who reliases on Rowdy for most things, he even reliases that Rowdy is his secret keeper and they would often share them with each other but they don't do that anymore.

SESSION 1

I think my strentghs in the wardli are that I ge ton with the work, I don't complain and I finish what is required and help other when they need it. I would like to improve my ability to communicate with the others and they do not know if I require help, I would also like to improve my indepence as I think i am alright in that aspect but I like to become even better.

Probably the biggest issuse was that a certain member in our Wardli was not doing his jobs properly and arguing a lot. He would often get up late and do things very slowly, like when emptying the bins he would take around 10 minutes. Then the second issuse was that the same individual would not allow us to cook or do anything in the kitchen durring dinner time, so we were really annoyed as on international night we had to force him away from the kitchen to allow and international boy cook. Then the final issuse was that during a washing load we would ask everyone if they had anything to wash, but the same person from before would say no and then when we are all finished he do a seperate load with a pair of socks, a t-shirt, two shorts and a couple of underwear, we all agreed that it was a waste of water and electricty. We raised all these issuses in the first wardli meeting and after that the member really changed and beome more helpful, I myself suggested that the only that person should do the kitchen so that if he fails he will get penalised not all of us.

My experiences have really impactes on my thoughts of my household and the role I play at home. I have had to lower my expectations for others, I have also had to step up for myself  and not be passive as this program is about empowering us. I ahve also changed the way I do things do benifit our wardli even more, I have been getting on with things I know need to be done so I do them, I also am able to help people with jobs they are struggling with such as mopping or sweeping their area.

SESSION 2
  • They should be able to do things indepently, they should not be asked to do anything as they should just get on with the work which is required.
  • They should always lead by example as others will always look up to someone who does their work properly and effeciently.
  • They should make everyone feel happy and cheerful as they should lighten the mood and make everyone feel alright when working with the others.
  • They should also be able to take on board critisicm and not reject them or ignore them as it could be for their benifit.
  • They should not relax until everyone is finished otherwise the workload will be shifted and the others will feel stress.
I think the most functional person in our wardli is a boy who takes responsibilty for their actions, they help and ask for help when needed, they are friendly with everyone, they use their intiative and do work that is required. We all stay with him but he will just quietly keep doing his work without disturbing anyone and if he sees work that needs to be done he just does it as he doesn't want to get into trouble when we are doing inspections.

My approach to maintaing a succesful Wardli for the remainder of the program is to just get on with your work, if you see something that has to be done then just do it, if you have finshed early in your area and you can see that someone else is struggling in their area and needs a bit of help then just do it otherwise you will get the blame as well. We should also learn to cooperate with others otherwise we will never get anything done.

Poetry

The Poem

The rocky cliffs are smashed by thr hurricane force waves.
Slowly yet steadily they eroded away.
Then it dies down,
It is calm and peaceful.
Look it is a rock pool,
Inside is a crab scuttling away.
And over there we can go snorkelling,
What do I see colourful little annemonie.
There it goes,
What  is it? you ask,
It turns out to be my poem floating away.
I wish it sank and disappered before I swim after it.

Masterchef Challenge

On Wednesday we took place in a master chef challenge, in which all four wardli's went up against each other with two hours to cook and clean up. Our menu included 2 dishes including a chocolate and banana cake with a Milo sauce and chocolate buttons on top, we also made a vegetarian stirfry. We tried to make the room seem large and cool we even sprayed some of Bill's expensive aftershave. We cooled the room with the air conditioner to create an atmosphere Bill offered his aftershave to the judges. Ray and myself tried to make a butterscotch pudding but it majorly failed and so I helped with the decoration on the cake. We ended up coming secondwith 37/50 and got to choose our prize. We decided to go skip the night session so we stayed in our Wardli, played cards and enjoyed our time. The best part was we got to miss out on the write up of this but I had to catch up on it later though. I still enjoyed particapting in the competition, but now I regret our decision and wish we chose the sleep in and didn't have to do game in the morning.

Bublacowie Military Museum and Memorial

The Bublacowie Military Museum and Memorial is a museum/ merorial that was created by Chris Soar and his late wife Enid. The museum was built on two acres of land to perpetuate memories of the sacrifices made by so many in all conflicts and to help pur young learn of our military history. The owner and curator of the museum himself is a Malay and Vietnam veteran.

The things that captured my  attention in the museum was the 30 mm Aden Gun that was on display and I even got to touch and feel its bullet. The weapon was fitted to a Sabre Jet Aircraft and there would be three of them attached to each aircraft. The cyclic rate of fire is 500 rounds per minute but the actual rate of fire is in short bursts only. This means that one plane would fire 1500 rounds per minute at it's target and not only that the planes fly in gruops of around three so there would actually be 45,000 rounds being fired per minute. The particluaer dun which was on display was found in the paddocks near Renmark and was restored by Chris Biddle. It was originaly on display in Whyalla at the Air FOrce Cadet Unit and it eventually found it's way to the Bublacowie Military Museum and Memorial, kindly donated by Chris Biddle in August 2006.

I think the Bublacowie Military Museum and Memorial is an incredable place to visit I learnt so much of Australia's history and heritage in sucha short amount of time in ttremendous amounts of detail and the best part was that it was really engaging and interactive. I also think it is important to respect the wishes and rights of the people's items and ashes which are kept there as it must mean a lot for them. I also think that for a malay and vietnam veteran to build australia's third biggest militray museum with his wife.

Leadership Day

I think my role as a leader is to organise people, support the boys who are struggling and also lead by example. I personally think i have been dping these things, although I have come up against lots of challenges, I think I conquered them. My main challenge was communication as I have really small soft voice which not many people can hear or recognise as I am not the bossy type I usually follow orders and suggest things. My other challenge was my physical and social state not many people listen to me as I am considered a small little nerd who does not know much but I soon overcame that barrier and now they recognise me for who I really am.

Next time I am leader I will have courage to ask other boys for help and 'order' them around. I will also try to speak up more and not back down or follow orders all the time instead I should become more of a leader. I think my strengths as a leader are that I can help people become organised, support boys who struggling with any task, I lead by example and I also use my initiative if I see something that needs to be done I just do i I don't ask questions or ask for help. As I have already said before I have to imrove on my communication skills and become more natural while being leader of the group.

Surfing

Today we went out to an amazing beach called Berry Bay North and it was difficult getting there as it was a 45 minute bus ride then we had to get all our gear of the buses including our surfboards, leg straps and rashvests, then we met our surf instructors they taught us about rips, hand signals and general safety on the beach first. Then we went down to the beach, did some warm up excersices, split up into gruops, learnt and practised getting on our board on the beach and then went into the ocean for some surfing, the waves turned out to be really small.

The beach was very pleasent it was sandy so it was safe when we came to the shore, the waves were no more than 1.5 foot tall, perfect for practising. There was a massive landmark on the dunes, it was the staircase, we could see it from everywhere we made sure that we were always in line with it and did not float of. On the dunes there was tremedus amounts of shrubery that held the sand on the foredune in place otherwise it would have blown away by the force ful winds we were experiencing in the water.
There are three main stages to stand on your surfboard:

  • Paddle when the waves gets close to you
  • When you can feel the wave has hit you put your hands on the board towards the edge with elbows pointing outwards and push so that your chest is not touching the board and you head is up.
  • Then you jump and twist your body into poisiton making sure that your back foot is on a 90 degree angle and your front foot is on a 45 degree angle.
  • Otherwise you can take the slower approach and slide your dominant foot into position and then slide your other foot into position whilst still holding on to your board.
  • Then turn your feet into the right angles (90 and 45) then let go of the board with your hands and you will be surfing but try to bend your knees and stay low as it reduces drag.
The best part of the surfing session was when this massive wave came in and almost everyone caught it and they all got dunked but i was still going all the way to shore. It felt amazing and I almost stood up on the way and then wiped out right near the end.

The worst part was when we all caught this massive wave and I was going really well but someone came right in front of me so I smashed straight into them and then he smashed into someone else causing a chain reaction. Then the other part was when another massive wave came I could quite catch it so I was dunked massively and even worse was that my mouth was open so I gulped loads of saltwater. When I was underwater I did a forward somersalut and apperanlty my board was flying around in the air.
